As just talked about, nearly all of bacterial cells compensate by having a cell wall that protects them from bursting even as the cytoplasmic membrane becomes turgid (ter-jid) from stress. It has a water, or contractile, vacuole that moves excess water back out into the habitat like a tiny pump.
